The Academy for Autism serves students in grades K-12 with an educational or medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have one ISBE licensed special educator and 3 ISBE licensed teacher assistants per classroom. There are 8 students per classroom. Support personnel include: Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Case Manager, Clinically Certified Speech Language Pathologist, and Certified Occupational Therapist.
Our team provides services described by the IEP and our team play an important role in designing classroom interventions. Education methods includes but not limited to:
- Discrete Trial Training
- Social Stories
- Visual Schedules
- Positive Behavioral Intervention Techniques
- Therapeutic Crisis Interventions
- Personalized developmental support and assessments ( i .e. Unique, STARS, VP MAPP, PEAK)
A referral comes from the student's home school district to the Program Director . With a signed release, a copy of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) is requested for review. Consideration for enrollment is contingent upon proper eligibility and determination that AFA is the appropriate educational setting. The Children's Home under took a three year collaborative analysis of the educational services for youth with an autism spectrum disorder who reside in Peoria or near by areas. This evaluation included many in-depth discussions with local school districts. It was determined that among other necessary services, there was a need for private day treatment placement . The Academy for Autism was opened in June of 2013 and serves children grades K- 12.
Empowering students to reach their full potential academically, behaviorally, socially and emotionally for the purpose of reintegrating them into their home district academic setting or integrating them into the community as independent individuals with the appropriate support.
