Good Beginnings

Provides education and support to first-time, at-risk pregnant and parenting young women in Peoria and Tazewell counties through home visiting, prenatal and parenting groups and Doula services. A Healthy Families program, all services are intended to strengthen the parent/child bond and foster positive attachments that have been proven to reduce the incidences of child abuse and neglect. As a family-focused, strength-based program, it promotes healthy prenatal and post-natal care, enhanced parenting skills, self-sufficiency and linkages to other community services.

1) Doula Services

Service begins in the third trimester of pregnancy. The Doula worker is specifically trained to support the mother during the time leading up to and including labor and delivery and immediately following the birth of the child. The Doula helps the participant develop a birth plan to empower her to make choices regarding the birth process.

2) Early Childhood Program

Serves first-time participants in need of all ages with home visiting and group services to improve the parent child bond, provide prenatal education and support and to enhance parenting skills. Participants may receive services until their first child turns three.

3) Teen Parent Program

Focus is on the special challenges faced by very young first-time mothers up to age 21. Prenatal education, parenting skills, parent/child interactions, safety awareness and child development are among the topics presented in group and home settings. Participants can receive these services until their first child turns five.
